So in the end I’ve moved to a new host (the recent niggles were the final straw, and I was up for renewal soon in any case). I had a few false starts, but I think I’ve got the wrinkles ironed out now. Cpanel makes backing up and transferring pretty easy, which was a relief.
I don’t expect anything to be broken, but if by some chance you do spot anything especially unusual or non-functional, do let me know by leaving a comment here or by emailing me (malevica at typehforheals dot com).
Apologies if you’ve noticed anything odd this evening, but it should be pretty much smooth sailing for a while now.

I had to change hosts and it was a royal pain, but ultimately worth it. Hopefully it’s going smoothly.
Thanks! It’s going mostly smoothly, actually.
I’m getting a few sporadic out of memory errors in the admin panel, which is pretty much down to the new host actually enforcing the 32MB limit for PHP. It doesn’t appear to be affecting the reader side of the site though, so it’s not an urgent problem. And I can always lose a couple of plugins.
Will see if I can’t get it sorted over the next few days.
Things I’ve learned lately:
If a hosting deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. You get what you pay for, and all that space and bandwidth is probably being paid for by not employing enough customer service people or by overselling servers.
Never have your web host responsible for any of your domain names. They have no incentive to unlock and transfer the names in a hurry, and if you’re moving on because of poor service the last thing you need is your domains in limbo while they faff about. Luckily the blog and most of my other new-ish sites are registered elsewhere, so the downtime here has been minimal. I can’t say the same for my personal website and email.
ADSL’s lopsided bandwidth absolutely sucks for re-uploading content. I know I should have set up an ftp site on the new host and let the two hosting companies’ connections handle the transfer, but I wanted a fresh local backup anyway and it seemed like a good idea at the time…
